“The north wind” 2015

During the course of a two-month creative residency in partnership with the Agence culturelle d’Alsace and the Frac Alsace, Saba Niknam revealed the surprising links that exist between the cultures of the Middle East, those of the Nordic peoples and the First Nations.
As if they were linked to the alignment of the stars, the Nordic cultures are strangely intertwined by their legends, symbols and traditions, all of which make up the artist’s drawings.
Inspired by the fauna and the Northern Lights, the dreamed worlds that she inks on paper immaculate with snow and enhances with gold leaf allow her to concretise the impossible.
Under the gaze of the northern wind that has seen and knows everything, her self-portraits ride wild animals, converse with the stars and see through the mother-of-pearl of shells.
Through her drawing process, which has become a healing ritual, the self-taught anthropologist artist Saba Niknam reflects on the links between art and shamanism.

“Le vent du nord”

Lors d’une résidence de création de deux mois en partenariat avec l’Agence culturelle d’Alsace et le Frac Alsace, Saba Niknam a dévoilé des liens surprenants qui existent entre les cultures du Moyen-Orient, celles des peuples de la Boréalie et des premières nations. Comme si elles étaient liées à l’alignement des astres, les cultures nordiques s’entrecroisent étrangement par leurs légendes, leurs symboles et leurs traditions, autant d’éléments qui composent les dessins de l’artiste. Inspirés de la faune et des aurores boréales, les univers rêvés qu’elle encre sur papier immaculé de neige et rehausse à la feuille d’or lui permettent de concrétiser l’impossible. Sous le regard du vent du Nord qui a tout vu et sait tout, ses autoportraits chevauchent des animaux sauvages, dialoguent avec les astres et voient à travers la nacre de coquillages. Par son processus de dessin devenu rituel de guérison, l’artiste anthropologue autodidacte Saba Niknam porte une réflexion toute actuelle sur les liens qui se tissent entre l’art et le chamanisme.
